GOALS – To Be or Not To Be

WEEK ONE

We are ¼ of the way through the year. How are you doing with your new year’s resolutions or goals for the year?

I am not into New Year’s resolutions. Don’t get me wrong – I believe in setting goals, having focus and purpose.

I don’t believe in a once a year look at my life. So much drift can happen in one year. I can totally miss the mark

So what do I believe in? Quarterly reviews of my whole life. We have a tendency to compartmentalize our lives. Different stages of life seem to have different focuses. Often times we get out of balance – sometimes that is from life happening. Frequently, it is from losing focus.

Envision your life as a wheel, like on a bike. Each spoke represents a part of your life – Family, Work, Heath, Spiritual, Recreation, Finances.

A bike ride is better when the tire is fully inflated. Imagine the tire having a flat side – the ride gets bumpy. Each component of our lives needs to have quality attention. Notice I didn’t say equal amounts of attention. Some areas require less focus to maintain balance.

My approach to life is to evaluate my wheel – rate each spoke on a scale of 1 – 10. Where is the flat side of my tire? What spoke is significantly lower in score? That is where I need to focus.

Before we go on, take time to evaluate your wheel of life.

Where do you need to focus attention?

In the following weeks, we will discuss how to round out your wheel of life.

You may wonder why a financial advisor is looking at goal setting. My philosophy is more of a wholistic approach to financial advising. Did you notice one of the spokes on the wheel is finances?

Finances impact the rest of your world. And the rest of your life impacts your finances.
